A life between borders

Jan Nepomucen Lewicki lived through a period of deep shifts in Poland. Born in 1795, his early years were shaped by the political tensions that eventually led him to participate in the November Uprising of 1830-1831. This involvement in the struggle for Polish sovereignty marked a significant chapter in his life, one that would later see him living in exile in Paris.

His time in France brought a different kind of focus. Away from the immediate conflicts of his homeland, he turned his attention to the fine details of people and their customs. He worked with pen, ink wash, and lithography, capturing the specific textures of life as it was being lived across different regions.

The detail of the everyday

Much of what remains of Lewicki's hand is found in his illustrations for books and periodicals. He had a way of looking closely at the clothing and faces of the people he depicted. In 1841, he contributed to Leon Zienkowicz’s work, Les costumes du peuple polonais, where he documented the traditional attire of the Polish people.

His drawings often focused on specific groups, such as his 1838 depiction of Lithuanians from the outskirts of Wilno. These works were not mere sketches but careful records of:

  • The weight and fold of traditional fabrics.
  • The particular way a hat or a sash sat on a figure.
  • The quiet, unadorned presence of individuals in their local settings.

In his lithographs, such as those produced with E. Simon fils in Strasburg, he used color to ground these figures in reality. He did not seek to change the subject but to present it clearly, often including inscriptions in Polish, French, German, and English to ensure the details of the customs were understood by a wider audience.

A lasting record

Lewicki passed away in 1871, leaving behind a body of work that functions as a visual archive. His portraits, including depictions of figures like Prince Józef Poniatowski, show a steady hand and an eye for the character found in a simple pose. Through his illustrations and paintings, he preserved the appearance of a culture during a time of great upheaval.
