Pasa nematomas pasa: Enigmatiškas Odilono Redono menas

Origins and History of Neue Pinakothek
The roots of the Neue Pinakothek lie in the personal collecting habits of Ludwig I of Bavaria. As crown prince, he began acquiring contemporary art as early as 1809. This private interest eventually transitioned into a public mission when the institution was established in 1853. It was conceived as a revolutionary space, specifically intended to be dedicated solely to showcasing contemporary works. This departure from the traditional focus on antiquity marked a significant shift in how art was curated and presented to the public.
The museum's focus remains centered on European Art of the 18th and 19th centuries. This period of production defines the core of the collection. Because of this concentration, the Neue Pinakothek has become one of the most important museums of art of the nineteenth century in the world. The institution provides a direct link to the stylistic evolutions of that era, preserving the visual language of a transformative century.
The Building and its Architecture
The architectural presence of the Neue Pinakothek is defined by a dialogue between different eras. Originally completed in 1859, the structure underwent a significant transformation during the late 20th century. Under the direction of architect Alexander von Branca, the building was reimagined through the lens of Postmodernism. This redevelopment resulted in a structure that balances neo-classical restraint with a distinct postmodernist flair.
The physical composition of the museum relies on a deliberate contrast of materials. A robust concrete skeleton provides the internal strength, while the exterior is clad in a shimmering façade of meticulously crafted limestone. This interplay of heavy, industrial elements and refined stone creates an arresting visual tension. When the building opened in 1981, it established a new aesthetic for the Kunstareal district, merging historical sensibilities with modern construction techniques.
Major Collections and Artistic Movements
The collection finds its strength in a deep concentration on the Romantic period. This focus allows for a sustained encounter with the emotional weight of 19th-century European art. Within these walls, the evolution of style is visible through the presence of the Nazarenes and the Munich Secession. The works move from the structured clarity of Classicism into the more intimate, domestic sensibilities of the Biedermeier style. There is a quiet continuity in how the Barbizon School and Impressionist landscapes occupy the space, tracing a shift in how light and nature are perceived.
The breadth of the holdings extends into the late 19th and early 20th centuries, where the tension between tradition and the new is palpable. Art Nouveau and Impressionism find their place alongside the more intense developments of Expressionism. The presence of Goya and significant works of English Art provides a cross-continental perspective on the era. Academic Art remains a foundational element, providing the context against which the later, more radical movements emerged. The collection does not merely present a timeline; it presents the shifting values of a century through its varied movements.

Masterpieces of the Collection
The presence of Gustav Klimt’s works provides a profound encounter with the transition into the modern era. In 1895, Music I was painted, offering a shimmering, golden embodiment of music through its use of gold leaf and intricate patterns. This work, alongside the 1905 Portrait of Margaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein, reveals a fascination with psychological depth and the decorative language of Art Nouveau. The portrait's geometric composition, defined by horizontal and vertical lines, creates a sharp contrast against the flowing drapery of the subject's gown.
Other works offer a study in light and form from across Europe. Édouard Manet’s Woman in a Tub remains a significant part of the collection, representing the evolution of Impressionism. The emotional weight of the Romantic period is felt in the quiet intensity of Caspar David Friedrich’s The Summer. Nearby, the dramatic tension of Eugène Delacroix is captured in The Death of Ophelia, a work that emphasizes the expressive power of color and movement.
The collection also holds significant portraiture and landscape studies that reflect shifting social and natural perspectives. Sir Thomas Lawrence’s 1793 work, The Two Sons of the 1st Earl of Talbot, provides a window into the formal traditions of the late 18th century. These works exist as physical presences, inviting a slow contemplation of the textures and pigments that define them.
Major Acquisitions and the Tschudi Contribution
The history of the Neue Pinakothek includes a period defined by the Tschudi Contribution, a chapter marked by intense artistic passion and political maneuvering. Following the dismissal of director Hugo von Tschudi, a group of associates initiated a significant fundraising campaign. This effort was directed toward acquiring works of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist significance, fundamentally altering the trajectory of the collection. The resulting acquisitions brought a new dimension to the institution, securing pieces by artists such as Henri Matisse and Édouard Manet.
These acquisitions expanded the museum's reach into the evolving language of modernism. The presence of works by Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin allows for a direct encounter with the shifts in perception that defined the late 19th century. These paintings exist within the halls as physical evidence of a transformative era in European art. The collection's strength lies in this specific concentration of visionaries who challenged established academic traditions.

Recent Projects and Renovations
The Neue Pinakothek is currently undergoing a major renovation project. Due to the extensive nature of this work, the museum is closed to the public. An enormous temporary roof has been constructed above the existing building to provide protection for the structure and the art within. This large-scale undertaking is being carried out in collaboration with the Munich-based practice Hild und K Architekten.
The timeline for these works has shifted, with the opening of the museum to visitors delayed until 2029, as announced in January 2022. While the main halls remain inaccessible, a selection of important 19th-century art is currently on display on the ground floor of the Alte Pinakothek and within the Sammlung Schack. These temporary displays allow for a continued presence of the collection while the primary site undergoes its transformation.
