He became a vital pulse within the Macchiaioli movement, an Italian collective of rebels who sought to capture reality through "macchie"—the spontaneous splashes or dabs of color that define the very essence of light and shadow. Cannicci’s brush often wandered through the sun-drenched expanses of Maremma and the ancient, rugged beauty surrounding San Gimignano.
