The Portrait of Serena

This monochrome portrait, dated 1790, depicts a woman named Serena in a seated position. She is positioned slightly off-center to the right, gazing downward at an open book held in her lap. The scene is illuminated by a lit candle resting on a small table beside her, which serves as a secondary focal point and casts shadows across her face and body. She is seated in a decorative chair featuring ornate carvings.

The artwork is rendered using an engraving or etching technique, characterized by a high level of textural contrast achieved through fine lines. The composition utilizes hatching and cross-hatching to define the folds of her dress and the textures of the furniture. The grayscale palette ranges from deep blacks to light whites, creating tonal variations that define form and depth.

Technical Composition and Style

The piece is executed with a focus on detailed rendering, typical of 18th-century portraiture. The following elements define the visual structure:

The perspective is relatively flat, consistent with the engraving style of the period, with depth achieved through the layering of lines and tonal variations. The lighting is primarily sourced from the candle, creating a sense of volume.
