Born in Antwerp, Belgium, Nicolaas van Eyck was the son of a tailor named Nicolaas van Eyck and Joanna Ros. He began his artistic journey in 1632 as a pupil of the prominent history and genre painter Theodoor Rombouts, studying under him at the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke. His family was deeply involved in the arts; his brother Gaspar became a marine painter, and his sons, Nicolaas II and Jan Carel van Eyck, also pursued careers as painters.
In 1643, he married Dymphna Heyman, and the couple resided at a prestigious address on the Meir in Antwerp. Van Eyck’s connection to civic life was significant, as he served as a captain of a local schutterij in 1658. His professional standing was recognized in works such as Jacob de Formentrou's Cabinet of Pictures, where a painting by van Eyck depicting an equestrian battle was included, signaling his status as a leading painter in Antwerp.
