The Life and Career of Martin Desjardins
Born in Breda, Netherlands, Martin Desjardins, also known as Martin van den Bogaert, was a sculptor and stuccoist who spent his mature career in Paris. After receiving early training in Antwerp under the sculptor Pieter Verbrugghen the Elder, he began working in Paris during the 1650s. His early professional output included decorative stucco reliefs for the Hôtel d’Aubert de Fontenay and the Hôtel de Beauvais. In 1661, he was accepted into the Académie de Saint-Luc under the name "Martin Desjardins," a translation of his Dutch name. By 1671, he was received as a member of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, following the creation of his marble relief, Hercules Crowned by Glory.
Royal Commissions and Sculptural Legacy
Desjardins' reputation led to significant royal commissions at Les Invalides and Versailles. His workshop produced several copies of the Diana of Versailles. One of his notable works was the monument to Louis XIV's victories on the Place des Victoires in Paris, which featured bronze representations of Four Captive Nations.
