The Life and Art of Julie de Graag
Born in Gorinchem, Julie de Graag was a Dutch watercolourist, printmaker, and painter. After her third birthday, her family moved to Bois-le-Duc, and they later relocated to The Hague in the 1890s. She received her training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, studying under Johannes Josephus Aarts and Henk Bremmer. Bremmer specifically advised her to focus on woodcuts in colour, a direction that contributed to her development as an independent artist skilled in woodcut, embroidery, and painting.
In 1904, she moved to Laren, North Holland, where she befriended sculptor Joseph Mendes da Costa and painter Bart van der Leck. Her career included teaching drawing at the Utrecht School for Girls. Tragically, a fire in 1908 destroyed a large number of her works in her workshop. She died in The Hague.
Artistic Style and Subject Matter
De Graag's oeuvre focused on floral themes, studies of animals, portraits, and views of villages. Her work is characterized by a refined and considered style that stood between the Art Nouveau movement and De Stijl. Her pieces often incorporated elements of abstraction, utilizing strong contrasting colours and the omission of details to create powerful imagery. Much of her portfolio consists of graphite renderings and watercolor illustrations.
In her printmaking, she utilized the end grain of wood for her wood engravings. Because the hardness of end grain wood is greater than longitudinal wood, this technique allowed her to produce much finer printings. Her portraits and animal studies share a stylistic similarity to the work of Joseph Mendes da Costa.
