A Life in the Norwegian Landscape
Frederik Collett lived much of his life within the quiet rhythms of the Norwegian landscape. Born in Christiania in 1839, he was part of a family with deep roots in the country's political and official circles. His early years were shaped by the presence of his father, Justice Johan Collett, and his grandfather, the statesman Jonas Collett. Though his mother passed away only days after his birth, his path toward the canvas was set early through an eight-year education in art, which included visits to Hans Gude in Düsseldorf.
He moved between different settings depending on the season. In the winter months, he sought the interior, settling around Lillehammer. When summer arrived, he moved toward the sea. This seasonal movement allowed him to observe the changing light and textures of the Norwegian coast and mountains. His travels also took him beyond Norway, reaching places like Wales, Paris, Chicago, Stockholm, and St. Petersburg, yet his work remained closely tied to the specific atmosphere of the regions he frequented most often.
The Brush and the Winter Light
His paintings often focus on the stillness of the natural world. He is frequently noted for his winter scenes from the area around Lillehammer. These works capture the weight of snow and the particular clarity of cold air. Using oil on canvas or board, he recorded the landscape with a steady hand. Some of his known subjects include:
- The snowy landscapes of Gran med sne
- Moonlight scenes such as Måneskinn ved Kuxhavn
- Waterfront views like The German Quay in Bergen
- Specific moments like March Evening, from Mesna
During the 1860s and through much of the 1870s, his style carried the influence of German Romanticism. This period of his work shows the impact of his studies under Hans Gude. As time passed, he became a central figure in a circle of artists that included Erik Werenskiold, Lars Jorde, and Gerhard Munthe. His later years saw him participating in major international exhibitions, representing Norway in Paris, Chicago, and St. Petersburg.
A Recorded Legacy
Collett's output consisted of approximately 230 recorded paintings. He did not marry and spent his final years at Gjørlia ved Lillehammer, where he died in 1914. His work has been preserved in significant collections, including the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Norway. Through these canvases, the specific light of the Norwegian winter and the quiet quays of Bergen remain visible.
