작품 상세 설명

‘Selection’ by Lyndsey Hatchwell, charcoal, pastel on paper, 2014, is part of a collection of drawings by Lyndsey Hatchwell, Joanne Morris and Bob McPhillips commissioned by Harry J. Fransman to illustrate his Holocaust experiences. On 10 May 1940, Germany invaded The Netherlands. It was the beginning of a five-year fight for survival for Harry J. Fransman. From the German bombing of Rotterdam where, as a 17-year-old apprentice in the men’s section of a department store he was the only survivor of the bomb blast, through the increasingly brutal antisemitic measures of the occupation, the inhumane treatment he experienced as a forced labourer, the harsh conditions he encountered in Blechhammer (sub-camp of Auschwitz), to his daring escape from a death march in the last chaotic weeks of the collapsing Third Reich, Harry’s story is expressed through a series of drawings he commissioned in 2014. Selection, roll call, punishment, beatings, hangings, humiliation, sexual abuse, starvation, exhaustion, lice infestation and even cannibalism witnessed in Gross-Rosen concentration camp, are illustrated through the direction and narration of the survivor in collaboration with the artists. These seminal events, seared into Harry’s memory, confront the viewer with the harsh reality of the war years and illuminate why survivors, like Harry, attribute their survival to a ‘miracle’.

A Legacy Forged in Creativity: The World of Lyndsey Hatchwell

Lyndsey Hatchwell is a contemporary artist whose work resonates with an eclectic energy, born from a rich family history steeped in artistic tradition and nurtured by a journey spanning New Zealand and Australia. Based in Sydney, her practice isn’t confined to a single medium; rather, it flourishes across painting, sculpture – particularly compelling works in bone, wood, and metal – and mixed media explorations. This versatility speaks to a deeply ingrained creative impulse, one that seeks expression through diverse materials and forms.

Born in Cambridge, New Zealand, Hatchwell’s artistic foundation was laid within the walls of her own home. Her father, a practicing artist and sculptor himself, became her first teacher, patiently guiding her through the fundamentals of painting and drawing. This early exposure wasn't merely instruction; it was an immersion into a way of life, where creativity wasn’t a pursuit but an inherent part of existence. The influence of this upbringing is palpable in Hatchwell’s work – a willingness to experiment, a comfort with tactile materials, and a sense of narrative depth that hints at stories passed down through generations.

From New Zealand Roots to Sydney's Art Scene

Hatchwell’s path took her from the serene landscapes of New Zealand to the vibrant art community of Sydney via a period in the UK. This geographical shift wasn’t simply a change of location; it was an evolution of perspective. While her foundational skills were honed in New Zealand, Sydney provided a broader platform for exploration and engagement with contemporary artistic dialogues. The move allowed her to refine her unique voice within a dynamic cultural landscape, fostering collaborations and expanding the scope of her work.

Her presence on platforms like Bluethumb has broadened her reach, connecting her art with collectors beyond the traditional gallery setting. This digital accessibility reflects a modern approach to artistic dissemination, allowing her works to find homes with those who appreciate their distinctive character. Furthermore, her active engagement on social media – Facebook and LinkedIn – demonstrates a commitment to building relationships within the art world and sharing her creative process.

Eclectic Themes and Material Explorations

The hallmark of Hatchwell’s work is its eclecticism. She doesn't adhere to a singular style or subject matter, instead embracing a diverse range of themes that reflect her personal interests and observations. This willingness to explore different avenues allows for a constant sense of discovery in her portfolio. From evocative paintings capturing the nuances of light and shadow to intricate sculptures crafted from organic materials, each piece offers a unique glimpse into her artistic vision.

Her sculptural work is particularly noteworthy. The choice of bone, wood, and metal as primary materials isn’t arbitrary; these substances carry inherent histories and textures that add layers of meaning to her creations. Bone, with its association with mortality and fragility, invites contemplation on the ephemeral nature of life. Wood, a symbol of growth and resilience, speaks to the enduring power of nature. Metal, often associated with strength and permanence, provides a contrasting element, creating a compelling dialogue between opposing forces.

A Third-Generation Artist: Continuing the Tradition

Lyndsey Hatchwell stands as a proud third-generation artist, carrying forward a legacy of creativity that spans decades. This familial connection isn’t merely biographical; it informs her artistic sensibility and provides a sense of continuity in her work. She builds upon the foundations laid by her father and grandfather, while simultaneously forging her own distinct path.

Her exhibitions in various Sydney galleries have solidified her position within the local art scene. While still developing, Hatchwell’s works are gaining recognition for their originality, technical skill, and emotional depth. She represents a compelling voice in contemporary Australian art – an artist who embraces tradition while fearlessly exploring new possibilities.
