Valley Ridge is a landscape painting by Ivan Eyre, executed in 1974. The work is an example of Contemporary Realism, utilizing acrylic on canvas to define its specific topography.

Composition and Visual Elements

The composition centers on a valley defined by rolling hills. These slopes are covered in various shades of green, suggesting dense foliage or thick grass. Scattered trees populate the landscape, appearing in the foreground and receding into the distance to establish a sense of depth. The arrangement of vegetation creates a layered effect across the terrain.

Flanking the valley are two distinct ridges. These formations appear as rocky outcrops or cliffs, rendered in a darker palette that provides a sharp contrast to the lighter, greener tones of the valley floor. The verticality of these ridges frames the central landscape, containing the viewer's gaze within the topographical basin. The focus remains entirely on the earth and its textures, as the sky is not visible in the frame.

The application of paint emphasizes the physical qualities of the environment. Brushstrokes are used to differentiate the roughness of the rocky cliffs from the perceived softness of the foliage. This technical approach creates a serene natural landscape through a balance of color and form.
