Hans Baldung Grien was born in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany. His technical approach often involved a variety of mediums, including woodcuts and engravings, but this specific work utilizes oil on a wooden support. The composition is narrow and vertical, measuring 82 cm in height and 36 cm in width.

Visual Composition and Subject Matter

The painting depicts a single female figure positioned centrally against a neutral background. The woman is presented in a state of nudity, with the composition focusing on her physical posture and the objects she carries rather than the anatomical details of her body. She stands with her left hand placed firmly on her hip, creating a sharp angle with her arm. In front of her torso, she holds a shield, which she grips to cover the center of her body.

The figure's stance is upright and steady. The shield acts as a primary vertical element in the composition, intersecting the lines of her limbs. Her skin tones are rendered with subtle gradations of light and shadow, defining the musculature and the curve of her waist. The placement of the hand on the hip and the presence of the shield establish a sense of defensive readiness in her physical arrangement.

The work is an oil on panel, measuring 82 x 36 cm. The vertical orientation of the narrow panel emphasizes the elongated proportions of the woman's body. Light falls across the subject from a consistent direction, casting soft shadows that delineate the edges of the shield and the contours of her form. The color palette remains controlled, focusing on the flesh tones of the subject and the material surface of the shield.
