작품 상세 설명

Abdul Abdullah was born in Perth, Western Australia, in 1986 and graduated in 2008 from Curtin University. He works across a variety of disciplines including painting, photography, video, installation and performance and has won numerous prizes and awards. As a self-described ‘outsider amongst outsiders’ his practice is primarily concerned with the societal experiences of the ‘other’ and he is particularly interested in the experience of young Muslims in the contemporary multicultural Australian context. Through his processes and explorations Abdullah extrapolates this outlook to an examination of universal aspects of human nature. Abdul Abdullah first heard of Aly in 2009 when his father gave him a copy of People Like Us. ‘I admired his capacity to see things from both sides. I see Waleed as a deep-thinker and I wanted to depict him in a moment of self-reflection, composing his thoughts.’ Abdul’s portrait of Waleed Aly was shortlisted as a finalist for the 2011 Archibald Prize, making him the youngest ever finalist in one of Australia’s longest running and most prestigious art prizes.

Abdullah Al Saadi: A Desert Bloom of Conceptual Art

Abdullah Al Saadi, born in Khorfakkan, United Arab Emirates in 1967, stands as a pivotal figure in Emirati art history and one of the “Pioneer Five” conceptual artists who reshaped the artistic landscape of the region. His journey began amidst the stark beauty of the desert environment—a formative influence that continues to permeate his oeuvre—and propelled him toward an internationally recognized career marked by groundbreaking explorations into form, materiality, and cultural heritage.

  • Early Life & Education: Little is known about Al Saadi’s formative years beyond confirmation of his birth in Khorfakkan. He pursued undergraduate studies at the United Arab Emirates University, focusing on English Literature, grounding him in critical analysis and broadening his intellectual horizons.
  • Formal Artistic Training: Recognizing the importance of disciplined technique, Al Saadi embarked on a postgraduate program at Kyoto Seika University in Japan, immersing himself in Japanese painting traditions—a deliberate choice that would profoundly shape his artistic vocabulary.
  • Conceptual Art Pioneer: Al Saadi’s emergence as a conceptual artist coincided with the burgeoning interest in experimental art forms within the UAE. He joined forces with Hassan Sharif, Hussain Sharif, Mohammed Kazem and Mohammed Ahmed Ibrahim to establish the “Pioneer Five,” a collective dedicated to challenging conventional artistic conventions and pushing boundaries of expression.

Major Exhibitions & Recognition: Al Saadi’s work gained considerable acclaim on both national and international stages. Notable exhibitions include solo presentations at Sharjah Art Foundation (“Al-Toubay”), showcasing his meticulous approach to collecting found objects and crafting intricate alphabets; participation in Sharjah Biennial 13, Venice Biennale 2015 and Sao Paulo Biennial 2004; and inclusion in ADACH Platform, Venice Biennale (2009). These engagements solidified his reputation as a visionary artist committed to exploring complex themes of identity and environment.
