Identification of the Self-Portrait by Albert Lang

This oil-on-canvas painting, titled Self-Portrait, captures the artist Albert Lang in a moment of quietude. Born in 1847 in Karlsruhe, Germany, Lang turned his gaze inward to document his own presence. The work is dated 1875. It remains a singular object of study, a painting that seeks to fix a specific identity upon the grain of the canvas.

The image functions as a formal record of the man behind the brush. Through the medium of oil, Lang translates the weight of his own features into a permanent, physical presence. He was a man of many cities, yet here he is anchored to a single, introspective moment. The brushwork traces the contours of a life shaped by both the precision of architecture and the fluid light of the painter's craft.

The portrait exists as a quiet confrontation between the subject and the viewer. It is a study of a man observing himself. The paint holds the stillness of a single breath.

Composition and Visual Elements of the Work

The composition presents a bust-length view of the artist, positioned slightly off-center. He looks directly at the viewer, his gaze steady and unblinking. This introspective male portrait captures a moment of quietude through a realistic style. The subject's face, framed by hair and a beard, emerges from a dark background. A jacket and necktie anchor the figure, while the texture of the skin is rendered with precision. The weight of the man is felt in the stillness of his posture.

Light and shadow define the physical presence of the subject. Chiaroscuro techniques guide the eye across the contours of the face and the folds of the clothing. The dark backdrop pushes the man forward, emphasizing the structural clarity of his features. Every detail, from the individual strands of hair to the subtle shifts in skin tone, is handled with a controlled application of paint. The work remains a study of a man meeting his own reflection.

Related Works by Albert Lang

The artist’s hand moved through many landscapes and faces. In 1874, he captured the Italian coast in Italienische Küste. By 1883, his brush turned toward figures such as Junges Mädchen and An der Quelle. These works reflect a life spent observing the weight of light and the quietude of human presence.

The late 1880s brought a continued focus on the natural world. His 1889 output includes Fahrendes Volk and Flusslandschaft. These compositions echo the movement of air and water. Later, in 1917, he rendered the Sitzender Pan in oil. He also returned to his own likeness in later years, producing a Selbstbildnis in 1911 and another Selbstbildnis in 1927.

Each canvas remains a fragment of a long, observant life. The paint settles into the grain of the memory. A quiet stillness remains.
