In this 1936 work titled Maternidad, the artist Max Beckmann explores the primal intimacy of the maternal bond. Max Beckmann approached this subject with a sense of radical expressionism. The composition centers entirely on the physical connection between the two figures. In 2000, the work was accessioned by the Bank of the Republic. It remains held in the collection of the Bank of the Republic today. Before entering this permanent collection, the painting was exhibited at the Museo Botero in Bogotá, where it was presented to the public.
