Identification of the Sculpture Diana

Jean-Antoine Houdon's marble sculpture Diana dates to about 1780. The work represents the Roman goddess of the hunt, depicted in a bust format that focuses on the head and shoulders. This specific rendition of the deity reflects the transition between the Rococo and Neoclassical styles prevalent during the late eighteenth century.

The subject matter draws from classical mythology, portraying the goddess through a lens of idealized form. Originally commissioned for Catherine of Russia, the piece later entered the collection of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. It is currently held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.

Visual Composition and Subject Matter

The composition centers on a marble bust of the Roman goddess Diana. The figure is turned slightly to the right, creating a dynamic silhouette that breaks the frontal plane. This positioning emphasizes the classical pose, capturing the goddess in a moment of poised grace. The subject matter draws directly from classical mythology, presenting the deity through an idealized lens of youthful beauty.

The sculpture focuses on the head and shoulders, utilizing a shallow perspective to direct attention toward the facial features and the intricate rendering of the hair. The drapery folds across the shoulder suggest a sense of modesty and vulnerability, contrasting with the strength inherent in the mythological subject. Light and shadow define the contours of the neck and the subtle musculature of the form, emphasizing the physical presence of the goddess.

Materials and Artistic Technique

Executed in marble, this Neoclassical sculpture utilizes subtractive carving to define the goddess's form. The artist achieved a smooth, polished texture across the skin, contrasting with the more intricate, detailed areas of the work. Fine lines are meticulously rendered within the hair curls and the folds of the drapery, demonstrating technical precision in the stone.

The surface treatment emphasizes the interplay of light and shadow through subtle gradations in tone. This method highlights the anatomical accuracy of the figure and the rhythmic patterns of the carved fabric. The material's natural properties are used to suggest both the softness of flesh and the weight of the cloth.
