A Life in Rotterdam
Hendrik Martenszoon Sorgh lived his life within the boundaries of Rotterdam. He was born there around 1610 and remained in the city until his death in 1670. His days were shaped by the local guilds and the quiet rhythms of Dutch domesticity. In 1633, he married Adriaantje Hollaer. His professional standing grew within the community, leading to his role as headman of the Rotterdam Guild of St. Luke in 1659.
His early training brought him under the guidance of David Teniers the Younger and Willem Pieterszoon Buytewech. These teachers left their mark on how he approached a canvas. While some accounts suggest his style leaned toward the methods of Adriaen Brouwer, his work often focused on the interior spaces of the common people.
