This industrial background informed his perspective as he transitioned from working with tempera to using oil as his primary medium. The specific piece, Barbara, is part of a body of work that explores themes of spirituality and the human condition. Sówka's approach to painting involved a focus on the essence of the subject through a particular use of color and composition. His technical development included formal studies in perspective and studio drawing under Zdzisław Krygowski.

Visual Composition and Subject Matter

The composition centers on a nude woman lying on the ground. Her legs are spread wide apart, and she is positioned amidst a layer of snow. White patches of snow cover parts of her body, suggesting she has been engaging in winter activities. Her facial expression and posture indicate she is enjoying herself while resting in the cold environment.

Several other people are scattered throughout the scene, distributed at various distances from the central figure and from one another. This arrangement creates a sense of depth and movement within the landscape. The figures are captured in different states of motion or rest; some individuals are standing, while others are sitting on the ground. These secondary subjects are positioned at varying intervals, populating the space around the main subject.
