The Life and Travels of Elizabeth Heaphy Murray

Born in London, United Kingdom, Elizabeth Heaphy Murray was a British watercolourist who led a life defined by movement and diverse landscapes. The daughter of the watercolour painter Thomas Heaphy, she began her artistic journey under his guidance, traveling and painting alongside him. Her life took her through many significant locations, including Rome, Morocco, the Canary Islands, and New England. During her time in Rome, she was known as the petite anglaise, where she focused on painting ancient sculptures and scenes of everyday life. After marrying Henry John Murray, a British consul, her travels were often dictated by his diplomatic assignments, leading the couple to reside in Morocco and later the Canary Islands.

In 1859, she published a two-volume monograph titled Sixteen Years of an Artist's Life in Morocco, Spain, and the Canary Islands. This work, which included descriptions of her adventures and observations of local society, was met with negative reviews in the Canary Islands. Following this, the family moved to Portland, Maine, in the United States, where they remained for sixteen years. She eventually died in Sanremo.

Artistic Style and Contributions

Murray was a prolific painter, primarily working with watercolours and the gouache technique. Her repertoire included portraits, miniatures, and landscapes, often featuring Mediterranean and Orientalist themes. Her palette was notable for its use of intense shades, including chestnut, blue, violet, pink, black, scarlet, gold, olive, and tar. While she was highly skilled in portraiture, she also captured the architecture and landscapes of the regions she inhabited, such as the Augustinian convents and the peaks of Tenerife.

Beyond her own canvas, she was a significant figure in the professional art community. Her achievements include:

Throughout her career, she also served as a teacher to several disciples, including Soledad Diston, Juan B. Fierro y Van de Walle Fierro y Valcárcel, Julia C. Furbish, and Mary Rolfe.
