The Work of Bernard Toon Gits
His brushwork captured specific moments in time. Looking at his output, one finds a focus on the relationship between the subject and the environment. He did not seek to overwhelm the viewer, but rather to record a particular sense of place and sound through color and form.
The details of his technique suggest a man focused on the immediate visual reality. He worked during the years leading up to the end of the first great war, a time when the world was shifting beneath the feet of many artists. His work remains a quiet record of that era.
