Early Life and Education
Alida Jantina Pott was a Dutch visual artist born in Groningen. She was the daughter of Pieter Hendrik Pott, a merchant and shopkeeper, and Lamberta Gerrechiena Heikens. Her formal artistic training took place at the Minerva Academy in Groningen and subsequently at the Hague Drawing Academy. Following her graduation as a drawing teacher in 1912, she returned to Groningen, where she began working at the Kweekschool for teachers in 1914. She maintained her position at this school until 1930.
Artistic Career and De Ploeg
Pott was one of the first members of the Groninger art collective De Ploeg. She created the winning design for the association's simple drawing symbol, a stylized P that has served as the logo for De Ploeg since 1919. During her time with the group, she held various board positions and served as secretary from 1919 to 1921. Her work spanned several styles, ranging from traditional realism to a flat-decorative style influenced by avant-garde movements. She utilized many techniques, though her watercolors are noted for a distinct handwriting.
Her repertoire included:
- Collages
- Watercolors
- Designs for wall and tablecloths
- Painted wooden pins with constructivist motifs
In addition to her fine art, she was active in design and applied art. Her work is held in the collection of the Groninger Museum, which includes pieces such as Girl with Long Red Hair and Green Bow and Orchard Blauwborgje.
