The Glamour of the Stage and the Parisian Light
As the interwar period unfolded, Lima Cruz’s artistry expanded from the printed page to the grand spectacle of the theater. Her talent for capturing elegance and movement made her a sought-after figure in the world of stage and costume design. During the 1920s and 1930s, she breathed life into the "magazine" shows of Portuguese vaudeville, creating costumes that were as much works of art as they were garments. Her journey took her to the heart of Paris in 1934, supported by a government scholarship, where her cosmopolitan sensibilities flourished. It was here that she achieved significant acclaim, designing exquisite costumes for the celebrated Portuguese singer and actress Corina Freire, who performed alongside the legendary Maurice Chevalier. She ventured into the monumental realm of murals, decorating spaces such as the Casino Estoril in 1935 and contributing to the Portuguese World Exhibition in 1940. In an era dominated by the conservative Estado Novo regime, her participation in these large-scale projects often carried a subtle, modernist weight. Alongside fellow sculptors, she co-founded the Salão dos Artistas Criadores in 1932, a sanctuary for stylistically original and progressive works that challenged the artistic status quo.
