Water is a neoclassical work by the artist Benjamin West. Born in 1738 in Springfield Township, United States, West established a significant presence in the transatlantic art world, eventually settling in Europe. His career spanned the transition between Neoclassicism and Romanticism, a period during which he became a central figure in the British art scene.

West's influence extended through his leadership within the Royal Academy and his ability to navigate the expectations of both aristocratic patrons and the evolving aesthetic standards of the eighteenth century. He died in London in 1820, leaving behind a body of work that helped define the genre of history painting for a generation of artists.
