A Modern Reimagining of Light
Born in 1968, Marine Leroy has emerged as a profound voice in contemporary digital illustration, breathing new life into the historical techniques of the late 19th century. Based in the vibrant cultural landscape of Lyon, her practice is an exquisite exploration of Pointillism. Rather than traditional brushstrokes, Leroy utilizes a meticulous digital architecture composed entirely of small, distinct colored dots. This method allows her to capture a luminous structure where light does not merely sit upon the surface but seems to emanate from within the very grain of the image.
The Science of Optical Blending
At the heart of Leroy's work is a deep mastery of optical mixing, a technique famously pioneered by Georges Seurat. By placing pure, unblended pigments in close proximity, she creates a dialogue with the historical gaze, inviting the viewer to participate in the creation of form. As one moves closer, the image dissolves into a rhythmic dance of individual points; as one retreats, these fragments coalesce into breathtaking landscapes and atmospheric portraits. This transition creates a sense of tactile silence, where the digital medium achieves a weight and presence rarely seen in modern illustration.
