Descrizione del pezzo

The green herring grew hands and feet that sprung from its face. However, not content with merely having human features, it attempted to magically grow wings and become the Garuda, one of the eight Buddhist demi-gods, so that it could be worshiped along with Buddha in the Mahavira Hall by followers. The second frame is entitled “Tale of the Green Herring–Fish Transforms and has a Human Face with Glowing Eyes”. At this stage of its life, the green herring gradually acquired a human face, with golden light shining from its eyes.

Biografia dell'artista

Early Life and Education

Wu Jian’an, born in Beijing in 1980, carries within him the spirit of Jinshan, Shanghai—his ancestral home—a connection that profoundly informs his artistic vision. From a young age, he demonstrated an exceptional aptitude for visual arts, nurturing a passion that would ultimately lead him to pursue formal education at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing in 2002. This formative experience solidified his understanding of both traditional Chinese art history and contemporary artistic trends, establishing a foundation upon which his distinctive style would flourish.

Artistic Style and Themes

Wu Jian’an's artistic approach is characterized by an audacious fusion of diverse mediums—collage, paper-cut artistry, and painting—a stylistic choice that defies easy categorization yet consistently delivers breathtaking results. His signature technique involves intricate paper-cut collages, a practice rooted in the rich heritage of Chinese folk art and mythology. These meticulously crafted compositions depict fantastical creatures and narratives imbued with symbolic meaning, reflecting a deep engagement with cultural traditions while simultaneously embracing innovative visual language. This harmonious blend of antiquity and modernity distinguishes Wu Jian’an's oeuvre and elevates it beyond conventional artistic boundaries.
