Descrizione dell'opera

Oliviero Rainaldi’s artistic trajectory is at the same time a spiritual pathway. Theartist has always had a great interest in the reinterpretation of traditional religiousiconography in a new formal light. In order to examine the relationship betweenart and liturgy in depth, he enrolled in various courses of theology and undertookthorough study of the Bible and Christian literature. The reading of Genesiswas a stimulus for reflection and creation for the artist, who worked for sixyears, until 1999, on a series of sculptures devoted to the stories of original sin, theflood and the repentant and redeemed figures found there. In the work from the series exhibited here, a finely stylized figure with a bowed head, stark and smooth, devoid of physiognomic connotations, exemplifies the feelings ofrepentance peculiar to the fallen. Biografia dell'artista

Oliviero Rainaldi: Sculptor of Serenity and Faith

Oliviero Rainaldi, born in Caramanico Terme, Italy, in 1956, is an artist whose work reflects a profound engagement with both the human form and the spiritual realm. His artistic journey began at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice (1975-1978) under the tutelage of Emilio Vedova, establishing a foundational understanding of expressive abstraction and challenging conventional artistic boundaries. This formative experience instilled in him a sensitivity to visual language that would permeate his subsequent creations. Vedova’s influence on Rainaldi's aesthetic is palpable—a deliberate embrace of abstraction as a vehicle for conveying emotion and exploring philosophical concepts. Like Vedova, Rainaldi seeks to transcend representational accuracy, prioritizing instead the transmission of feeling through simplified forms and textures. This approach distinguishes him from more literal artistic traditions, positioning him firmly within the vanguard of modern sculpture. Following his academic studies, Rainaldi pursued theological training for laics at the Pontifical Athenaeum of St. Anselm in Rome (1978-1980), deepening his intellectual exploration and enriching his artistic perspective with philosophical considerations concerning faith and spirituality. This dual pursuit – art and theology – informs a distinctive approach to sculpture, characterized by meticulous attention to detail and imbued with symbolic resonance. He believes that art can serve as a conduit for spiritual contemplation—a conviction that shapes his creative process and guides his selection of materials and techniques. Rainaldi’s sculptural practice is marked by an unwavering dedication to capturing the essence of human movement and emotion through elegant forms and refined textures. He favors materials like bronze and alabaster, skillfully manipulating them to achieve remarkable luminosity and conveying a palpable sense of tranquility. His sculptures are often conceived as meditations on stillness and balance—visual representations of yoga principles that invite contemplation and introspection. The deliberate use of alabaster, known for its milky translucence, contributes significantly to this atmosphere of serenity, mirroring the artist’s desire to evoke inner peace in his viewers. A landmark achievement in Rainaldi’s career is undoubtedly the monumental sculpture commemorating John Paul II at Termini Station in Rome, Italy. This ambitious project exemplifies his ability to transform complex ideas into powerful artistic statements, demonstrating a commitment to public art and its role in fostering dialogue and remembrance. The sculpture's placement within the bustling Termini station underscores Rainaldi’s intention to engage with the everyday realities of urban life—to elevate spirituality through monumental form amidst the dynamism of modern society. Furthermore, his exhibition ‘Oliviero Rainaldi. 2023 AD’ showcased at the Crypt of San Sepulcro solidified his reputation as a contemporary artist grappling with themes of faith and human experience. ## WORKS Rainaldi's oeuvre encompasses a diverse range of sculptural projects—from intimate figures to expansive installations—each reflecting his core artistic principles. Notable among these are: *Conversazioni*, a tribute to Pope John Paul II at Piazza dei Cinquecento, Rome; *Senza titolo*, bronze sculpture; *Naufragio*, alabaster sculpture; and *Antigone*, marble sculpture commissioned by the University of Roma Tre. These works demonstrate Rainaldi’s mastery of various materials—bronze, alabaster, marble—and his ability to translate philosophical concepts into compelling visual narratives. ## INFLUENCES AND STYLE Emilio Vedova remains a pivotal influence on Oliviero Rainaldi's artistic vision—a shared commitment to expressive abstraction and a rejection of representational conventions. Vedova’s exploration of emotion through simplified forms serves as a guiding principle for Rainaldi, who strives to communicate profound spiritual truths through sculptural language. Beyond Vedova, Rainaldi draws inspiration from classical sculpture—particularly the works of Michelangelo—acknowledging the enduring legacy of humanist ideals within Western art history. ## EXHIBITIONS AND RECOGNITION Oliviero Rainaldi’s sculptures have been exhibited internationally at prestigious venues such as Palazzo Venezia, Rome; GAM, Bologna; Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt; Museo Beelden aan Zee, Scheveningen; Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids, Michigam; MAMbo, Bologna; and The Crypt of San Sepulcro. His work has garnered critical acclaim for its elegance, subtlety, and spiritual depth—a testament to Rainaldi’s dedication to artistic excellence and his ability to engage viewers on an emotional level.
