Table Telegraph built by Maximiliano Herrmann and innovated later by Cristiano Augusto Bramão. This is an innovative piece in the world of communication since it allowed a faster transmission and reception as well as a better economy in the consumption of the ticker tape, due to its double chain operation. With this innovation, Herrmann intended to fix the problem in the Telegraphic Morse Receivers. Before there was a major technical problem since the Morse Receivers were constituted with a dry tip or a strip with ink. In the dry tip case, the signals were marked in the paper with a steel pointer, but these were of difficult perception and disappeared easily. With the ink on paper strip method it was, sometimes, impossible to read due to the excess of ink. Because of these technical problems, Herrmann built a type of inkstand with a thin stylus, flexible enough to allowed the user to adjust, using just the enough amount of ink to write the message. This innovation was made known to the Foreign Telegraphic Administrations and was presented in 1865 at the International Telegraphic Conference in Paris, by José Vitorino Damásio, director of the Portuguese Telegraphs. This rectangular trapezoidal shaped piece is made of wood, golden brass, metal and glass. The front face has a plate on which the model is identified. In the right side of the upper panel there is a reel with paper tape where the telegraphic message was printed, also containing two morse keys that worked with a manual computer. In the center and in the left there is a clockwork mechanism consisting of a mechanical system of gears in brass, copper and metal. At the rear face there is six pins for connecting wires identified by the letters

Biografia dell'artista

Maximiliano Augusto Herrmann (1838-1930): Pioneer of Portuguese Telecommunications

Maximiliano Augusto Herrmann stands as a pivotal figure in the history of Portuguese engineering and innovation, largely unrecognized outside specialist circles until recent decades. Born in Lisbon on April 17, 1838, he possessed an inquisitive mind and a relentless dedication to advancing technological capabilities – qualities that would propel him to become one of Portugal’s foremost inventors and engineers.

Early Life & Education

Herrmann pursued his formal education at the Industrial Institute of Lisbon (1857-1862), equipping himself with a foundational understanding of mechanics and instrumentation. This academic grounding would prove invaluable as he embarked on his inventive pursuits. He demonstrated an early aptitude for scientific inquiry, foreshadowing his future accomplishments in technological innovation.

The Herrmann Wall Telephone – A Revolutionary Breakthrough

Herrmann’s most enduring legacy rests upon his creation of the “Herrmann wall telephone,” introduced in 1880. Recognizing the limitations of existing telephone systems, he conceived a radical design incorporating buttons to activate the instrument—a monumental step forward that dramatically simplified operation and facilitated the expansion of public telephone lines across Portugal's major cities. The telephone’s construction involved meticulously crafted double earpieces utilizing flexible tubes and a fixed transmitter, reflecting Herrmann’s meticulous attention to detail. This ingenious device represented a significant departure from conventional designs and established him as a visionary in communications technology.

Campaign Telegraph – Enhancing Morse Code Transmission

Expanding his expertise beyond telephony, Herrmann tackled the challenges of telegraphic communication. He significantly improved Morse receivers by streamlining their design and simplifying regulation—a contribution lauded at the International Telegraphic Conference in 1865. His innovations underscored a commitment to improving efficiency and accessibility within this burgeoning field. Herrmann’s meticulous approach to instrumentation mirrored his broader dedication to advancing scientific knowledge and practical applications.

International Recognition & Awards

Herrmann’s inventive prowess garnered considerable acclaim internationally. He received numerous awards for his contributions to engineering, cementing his reputation as a visionary thinker and innovator. These accolades acknowledged the transformative impact of his inventions on Portugal's technological landscape and solidified his place in the annals of scientific history. His work inspired subsequent generations of Portuguese engineers and cemented his legacy as a champion of progress.

The “Campaign Telegraph,” another of Herrmann’s creations, utilized Morse code transmission with transmitter and receiver components—a testament to his understanding of fundamental principles of electrical signaling. These improvements were recognized as crucial for enhancing telegraphic performance.

His influence can be seen in the subsequent development of Portuguese telecommunications, demonstrating that Herrmann's pioneering spirit continues to inspire innovation today.
