Ángel Valdez (Lima, 1961), in his reflections upon tripartite worlds and times (based on the ideas of the medieval theologist Joaquín de Fiore regarding the division of time into three epochs, in accordance with the dogma of the Christian trinity), is inspired by the Cusco School colonial-era painting “The Trinity Enthroned as Three Identical Figures”, in order to represent the stages into which Peruvian history has been divided traditionally (Pre-Hispanic, colonial and republican periods). The three figures are combined with references to digital and electronic technologies. At the heart of the composition, the sign “For rent” refers to the history of Peru.

Biografia dell'artista

A Peruvian Visionary Bridging Anthropology and Baroque Tradition

Ángel Valdez Rosales emerged from Lima, Peru in 1961, inheriting a rich artistic heritage rooted in Andean cosmology and imbued with the spirit of intellectual curiosity. His formative years were marked by studies at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú’s anthropology program, fostering an understanding of cultural narratives and symbolic representations that would profoundly shape his artistic vision. Simultaneously, he honed his painting skills at Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes de Lima, grounding him in classical techniques and establishing a foundational appreciation for visual artistry.

Early Career & “Juicio Sumario”

His artistic journey commenced in 1991 with “Juicio Sumario,” a monumental canvas that immediately signaled Valdez Rosales’s ambition to grapple with complex themes of judgment, perception, and the interplay between subjective experience and objective reality. This piece exemplifies his characteristic approach – blending meticulous observation with conceptual depth—a hallmark that would define much of his subsequent oeuvre. The artwork explores intricate visual metaphors, drawing inspiration from Andean iconography and subtly referencing biblical narratives, demonstrating Valdez Rosales’s commitment to synthesizing disparate cultural traditions. It is considered his breakthrough work, showcasing a distinctive style characterized by layered textures and luminous color palettes.

Recognition and Grants: Shaping Artistic Horizons

Valdez Rosales garnered significant acclaim throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s thanks to grants awarded by Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional (Aeci) for artistic projects and a prestigious scholarship from Ministerio de Educación y Cultura de España focused on professional training in the ibero-american cultural sector. These experiences broadened his perspective, exposing him to diverse artistic practices and fostering collaborations with fellow artists who shared a passion for revisiting the grandeur of baroque painting. This collective endeavor aimed to revitalize traditional techniques while injecting them with contemporary conceptual concerns.

Collaboration with Fellow Artists: Rediscovering Baroque Painting

His dedication to artistic exploration culminated in numerous international exhibitions showcasing his distinctive style—characterized by layered textures, luminous color palettes, and evocative imagery—solidifying his reputation as one of Peru’s foremost artists. Critics lauded Valdez Rosales for his ability to distill complex ideas into visually arresting compositions, highlighting the enduring relevance of his work within the broader context of Latin American art history. He actively pursued partnerships with other creatives who shared a similar interest in reviving baroque painting techniques.

International Exhibitions & Critical Acclaim

His artistic journey continued to unfold on an international stage, earning him critical acclaim for his ability to engage viewers emotionally and intellectually. Valdez Rosales’s work has been presented in prestigious venues across Europe and America, cementing his position as a significant voice within the contemporary Peruvian art scene. His exploration of symbolism and visual storytelling—evident in pieces like “None so blind”—resonates powerfully across time, prompting reflection on human perception and artistic expression.

Legacy and Continuing Influence

Today, Ángel Valdez Rosales remains an inspiration for aspiring artists and curators alike, ensuring that his contribution to Peruvian art history endures. His unwavering pursuit of intellectual rigor combined with masterful execution guarantees that “None so blind,” and countless other pieces continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
