Cosa raffigura Cloud Study?
Identification of Cloud Study by Adalbert Stifter
Cloud Study is an oil on canvas painting by Adalbert Stifter. The artist, who was born in 1805 in Horní Planá, Czech Republic, produced this work about 1840. The composition focuses on the atmospheric layers of a sky above a low horizon line.
The work is a landscape oil painting. It measures 21.5 x 32.0cm. Stifter's approach to this piece emphasizes the scale of the sky, which occupies approximately four-fifths of the canvas. The lower portion of the image contains dark, silhouetted hills that establish a base for the expansive cloud formations above.
Composition and Visual Elements of the Work
The composition is dominated by the sky, which occupies approximately four-fifths of the canvas. This vast expanse is viewed from a wide-angle perspective, emphasizing the immense scale of the atmosphere. At the bottom of the frame, a low horizon line contains dark, silhouetted hills. These landforms provide a grounded base for the expansive celestial formations above.
The arrangement of elements creates a sense of tranquility. The organic, swirling shapes of the clouds follow soft, diffused lines rather than sharp geometric contours. These formations move across the upper portion of the work, filling the majority of the visual field. The placement of the dark hills at the base of the composition establishes a clear division between the earth and the sky.
Technique and Material Composition
Executed in oil on canvas, this work adheres to the principles of Romanticism through its focus on atmospheric phenomena. The artist employs a method of layering thin washes of color to establish a sense of depth within the sky. These translucent applications of pigment allow for a gradual transition between the pale yellows and the muted greys that define the cloud formations. The resulting surface exhibits a painterly quality where colors are blended to suggest the movement of air and moisture.
The brushwork is soft and lacks sharp, geometric contours. Instead, the lines are diffused, following the organic and swirling shapes of the clouds. This approach avoids hard edges, favoring a technique that emphasizes the weightless quality of the vapor. The application of paint appears layered rather than flat, creating a sense of volume within the overcast sky. The texture of the oil medium is used to build up the edges of the light, where white and pale yellow pigments meet the darker, silhouetted tones of the lower horizon.
Atmospheric Qualities and Lighting Effects
The lighting in this composition emanates from behind the heavy cloud formations, creating a sense of depth within the overcast sky. Sunlight breaks through the dense layers, catching the edges of the clouds and defining their organic, swirling shapes. These perimeter edges are highlighted with pale yellow and white, contrasting against the darker, more muted tones of the central cloud masses. The light creates a sense of immense scale across the wide-angle view of the sky.
The color palette is composed of soft blues, pale yellows, greys, and earthy browns. These tones are applied with painterly and blended textures, where thin washes of color appear to layer upon one another. This technique establishes a diffused atmosphere, particularly where the light meets the darker, silhouetted hills at the low horizon line. The interplay between the pale highlights and the greyish, atmospheric tones produces a sense of tranquility across the vast expanse.

Adalbert Stifter
