Wenceslaus Hollar, born Václav Hollar in Prague, Bohemia, was a virtuoso of the Baroque era whose needle captured the very essence of 17th-century life. His artistic development was shaped by a series of profound encounters and travels. After an apprenticeship with the renowned engraver Matthäus Merian in Frankfurt, Hollar traversed the landscapes of Germany, documenting the towns, castles, and vistas of the Middle Rhine Valley. His talent eventually caught the eye of the influential nobleman Thomas Howard, the 21st Earl of Arundel. Serving as a draftsman in the Earl's household, Hollar traveled to Vienna and Prague, finding himself at the heart of significant artistic exchange.
