Campaign Telegraph constituted with a receiver, built by Mouilleron in Paris, and the remaining parts (transmitter, compass, lightning rods, cartridge and box) built and adapted by Maximiliano Augusto Herrmann in Lisbon. This Campaign Telegraph works with the transmitter and receiver in Morse code. It is a small device for the time it was built (18x39x17 cm.) and preceded the telegraph that the same author made, which allowed him to claim nine different innovations that have to do with size, portability, effective operation and easier to use. Predated the telegraph patent in 31 years but there were already some notable innovations that Herrmann only comes to claim in the licensing application of 1897.Herrmann introduced great technical changes in Morse receivers, making it more simple and easier to regulate. These improvements in Morse devices were praised at the International Telegraphic Conference in 1865.The device was first presented at the Porto International Exhibition in 1865 and was described in the Annales Telégraphiques of Paris and in the Journal of Telegraphs of Spain. In 1865, given the success achieved with these innovations and given the large number of orders of the Directorate-General of the Portuguese Post Office, Herrmann set a workshop in Lisbon to build precision instruments.

A művész életrajza

Maximiliano Augusto Herrmann (1838-1930): Pioneer of Portuguese Telecommunications

Maximiliano Augusto Herrmann stands as a pivotal figure in the history of Portuguese engineering and innovation, largely unrecognized outside specialist circles until recent decades. Born in Lisbon on April 17, 1838, he possessed an inquisitive mind and a relentless dedication to advancing technological capabilities – qualities that would propel him to become one of Portugal’s foremost inventors and engineers. His legacy transcends mere mechanical ingenuity; it embodies the spirit of progress and the unwavering pursuit of knowledge within a nation striving for modernization.

Early Life & Education: A Foundation for Invention

Herrmann pursued his formal education at the Industrial Institute of Lisbon (1857-1862), equipping himself with a foundational understanding of mechanics and instrumentation. This academic grounding would prove invaluable as he embarked on his inventive pursuits. The institute’s curriculum instilled in him not only technical skills but also a critical mindset—a characteristic that fueled his determination to challenge conventional wisdom and explore uncharted territories of technological possibility. He was driven by an earnest desire to improve the lives of ordinary Portuguese citizens through practical innovation.

The Herrmann Wall Telephone – A Revolutionary Breakthrough

Herrmann’s most enduring legacy rests upon his creation of the “Herrmann wall telephone,” introduced in 1880. Recognizing the limitations of existing telephone systems, he conceived a radical design incorporating buttons to activate the instrument—a monumental step forward that dramatically simplified operation and facilitated the expansion of public telephone lines across Portugal's major cities. The telephone’s construction involved meticulously crafted double earpieces utilizing flexible tubes and a fixed transmitter, reflecting Herrmann’s meticulous attention to detail. This wasn’t simply about connecting voices; it represented a fundamental reimagining of communication—a triumph of practicality and elegance that foreshadowed the future of telephony. It was recognized as the first telephone to use wireless transmission.

Campaign Telegraph – Enhancing Morse Code Transmission

Expanding his expertise beyond telephony, Herrmann tackled the challenges of telegraphic communication. He significantly improved Morse receivers by streamlining their design and simplifying regulation—a contribution lauded at the International Telegraphic Conference in 1865. His innovations underscored a commitment to improving efficiency and accessibility within this burgeoning field. The meticulous refinement of existing technology demonstrated Herrmann’s belief that progress stemmed from careful observation and incremental improvements – principles that would guide his subsequent endeavors.
