Berenice (Bernardo Strozzi, 1640) Egy olajfestmény, amelyet csak Önnek festettünk kézzel

Composition and Visual Elements

In this intimate portrait of Berenice by Bernardo Strozzi, the composition is tightly framed, focusing our attention on the subject’s face and upper body. The artist employs a dramatic chiaroscuro, where a strong light source illuminates her features and chest, leaving the background in deep, quiet shadow. This technique creates a sense of sudden movement and emotional weight. Her gaze is directed upwards and slightly to the left, as if she has just encountered something unexpected. This expression, suggesting a moment of shock or revelation, is heightened by the way she holds a feathered plume in one hand.

The color palette is composed of warm, grounded tones. We see a careful arrangement of flesh colors, browns, reds, and creams that define the subject against the darkness. Bernardo Strozzi uses light and shadow to suggest a variety of textures, from the softness of the skin to the tactile quality of the feathers. The brushstrokes are painterly, contributing to the realism of the figure while maintaining a sense of Baroque intensity. The interplay of light on the drapery and the subtle gradations of tone provide a depth that makes the figure feel present and immediate.

The History and Provenance of the Work

The lineage of this canvas is quite distinguished, tracing its path through several significant private hands. It was once part of the collection of the Duc de Trévise in Paris. From there, the work moved into a private collection in Southern France, held by Julius Weitzner in New York. Such transitions through private estates often preserve the integrity of a piece, allowing it to remain in stable, quiet environments for decades.

A notable shift in its history occurred on 30 January 1952, when the painting was sold to Samuel H. Kress. This acquisition ensured the work's transition from private ownership toward a more public legacy. Following this period, the piece was gifted to the El Paso Museum of Art in 1961, where it has remained since.
