Walter Elmer Schofield was a master of the American Impressionist movement, a painter whose soul seemed inextricably linked to the raw, unyielding vitality of the natural world. Born in Philadelphia, he possessed a rugged, outdoorsman's temperament that defined his approach to the canvas. Standing as a tall and commanding figure, Schofield did not merely observe nature from the safety of a studio; he engaged with it, often painting en plein air amidst the most biting winter winds and turbulent weather. This direct communion with the elements allowed him to capture the true essence of motion—the way wind moves through a landscape or how dark rivers surge between snowy banks.
His artistic journey was shaped by a transatlantic existence, bridging the landscapes of the United States and Europe. After studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Anshutz, he traveled to Paris to refine his craft at the Académie Julian. There, he absorbed the light and color of the French Impressionists, an influence that would later merge with his own robust, masculine style. His life was a rhythmic movement between the American Northeast and the coast of England, specifically St Ives in Cornwall, where he lived much of his life with his wife, Muriel. This dual heritage brought an international sweep to his work, blending the seasonal rhythms of Pennsylvania and New England with the maritime beauty of the English coast.

Schofield’s technical evolution is a fascinating study in the transition from soft Tonalism to a bold, vibrant Impressionism.
