In the misty, industrial heart of nineteenth-century Scotland, a new way of seeing was being forged through the marriage of chemistry and light. Thomas Annan, born in 1829 in the small village of Dairsie, Fife, emerged from humble origins as the son of a flax spinner to become one of the most profound witnesses to the human condition.
