A Life Within the Courts

Born in Sigmaringen on 4 February 1823, Richard Lauchert moved through the upper echelons of European society with a quiet, professional grace. The son of Court Chamberlain Joseph Lauchert and Maria Waldburga Guttenberg, his early path was shaped by the structured world of the German aristocracy. He received his education at the Hedinger Progymnasium and later the Grand Ducal Baden Lyceum in Konstan, preparing him for a life of disciplined study. His talent caught the attention of Prince Karl Anton von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, who provided support during Lauchert's formative years.

His training was rigorous and classical. From 1839, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Peter von Cornelius, later refining his skills at a painting school led by Joseph Bernhardt. This period focused heavily on the study of nudes and portraits. In 1845, Lauchert traveled to Paris, where he worked alongside Franz Xaver Winterhalter, an experience that likely deepened his understanding of the requirements of high-society portraiture.

The Painter of Aristocracy

By 1858, Lauchert had settled in Berlin as a freelance painter. He quickly became a fixture within the highest circles of society, eventually serving as a court painter at the Berlin court and for the Hohenzrolzen family. His reputation was built upon an ability to capture the dignity of his subjects through a masterful treatment of flesh tones and textiles. His work often possessed an elegant, sometimes sweet approach that appealed to the tastes of the era.

His commissions spanned several major European courts, including those of Germany, England, and Russia. Notable subjects included:

  • Lieutenant Colonel Baron Helmuth von Moltke
  • Queen Alexandra when she was Princess of Wales
  • Prince Robert d'Orléans, duc de Chartres
  • Various members of the Hohenlohe family

Personal Ties and Final Years

Lauchert’s personal life was marked by a significant act of devotion. In 1857, he married Princess Amalie Adelheid of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst in Herbsleben near Gotha. The union occurred against the wishes of her family, yet the strength of his character eventually led to a reconciliation with her kin. The couple had five children, though only three lived to adulthood.

The artist's later period showed a marked improvement over his earlier productions, reaching a level of technical maturity that defined his professional peak. His life ended in Berlin on 27 December 1868. He left behind a body of work that remains a record of the faces and fashions of the nineteenth-century European nobility.
