A Life of Noble Standing
The story of Maria Susannah Simpson is one woven into the fabric of the British aristocracy. Known by many names throughout her years, she moved through the upper echelons of society as Maria Liddell and later as Baroness Ravensworth. Her life, spanning from 1773 to 1845, was defined by her station and the titles she held, such as Maria Susanna Lady Ravensworth.
She lived during an era of great transition in Britain, carrying the weight of her lineage with the quiet dignity expected of a noblewoman. While history remembers her through her titles, her presence was felt within the halls of the estates she inhabited.
The Legacy of Ravensworth Castle
Though she was not a painter by trade, her connection to the visual arts remains preserved through the objects associated with her name and estate. One particular work, an oil on canvas titled Ravensworth Castle, captures a moment from between 1839 and 1840. This painting offers a glimpse into the physical world she occupied.
The work exists today within the Royal Collection, held under the accession number RCIN 400808. It provides a window into the architecture and atmosphere of her era, specifically focusing on the castle that bears her title. Through this single piece of art, the memory of her surroundings survives.
