Description de la pièce

Riding habit by Creed, which had been famous for the quality of its tailored suits. This habit which mixes the tailored jacket and jodhpurs that provided functional riding wear for men with feminine elements such as the long skirt, was the formal standard for women riders until the 1930s. The quality tailoring and careful hand stitching combine with dignified, thick fabrics to create a refined silhouette characterized by functional beauty.Horse riding was traditionally a privilege of the upper classes, and enjoyed by women as well as men. In France, the riding habit worn by women called “amazone,” after the mounted female warriors of Greek legend. The riding habits incorporated elements from men’s riding wear, but women were not permitted to straddle a horse, and had to ride sidesaddle wearing a skirt. In the second half of the 19th century, riding began to gain popularity among the general public, but sidesaddles and skirts remained the norm for women. For the sake of safety and functionality, women actually wore similar breeches as men, but they were inevitably hidden by a skirt. Other than exceptions, such as Gabrielle Chanel, who was already wearing jodhpurs and riding together with men around the time of World War I, it was not until the end of the 1930s that sidesaddle largely disappeared.

Biographie de l'artiste

Richard Creed: Exploring Suburban Landscapes Through Contemporary Painting

Richard Creed is a British contemporary artist currently residing in London, whose artistic practice centers on capturing the essence of urban and semi-rural environments through meticulous observation and expressive markmaking—a tradition deeply rooted in Luminism. Driven by an enduring fascination with the interplay between nature and architecture—particularly within the context of suburban Britain—Creed’s oeuvre embodies a profound commitment to conveying nuanced emotional responses to everyday experiences, mirroring the spirit of artists like William Trost Richards and Hans Holbein le Jeune.

Early Life & Artistic Formation

Details concerning Creed's formative years remain elusive, yet he pursued formal art training at Chelsea School of Art in London—a pivotal step toward honing his skills in drawing and painting techniques. This foundational education instilled within him a disciplined approach to visual representation and fostered an appreciation for the subtleties of tonal gradation and textural variation—elements that would become hallmarks of his distinctive artistic style.

Style & Technique: Luminist Echoes

Creed’s stylistic signature distinguishes itself through a deliberate blending of realism and abstraction, achieved primarily via oil paints applied onto canvas. He meticulously builds up surface textures—often resembling weathered stone or aged timber—employing multiple layers of pigment to capture the subtle shifts in light and colour characteristic of Luminism—a movement originating in the mid-19th century that championed atmospheric perspective and spiritual contemplation. This technique reflects Creed’s belief that art should transcend mere visual depiction, striving instead to evoke emotional resonance and prompting viewers to contemplate deeper truths about their surroundings. The artist's meticulous brushwork contributes significantly to conveying a palpable sense of place—a core element of his artistic vision.

Influences: Richards & Pre-Raphaelites – A Dual Legacy

Creed acknowledges the profound influence of William Trost Richards, recognizing Richards’ masterful depiction of American landscapes imbued with spiritual depth and emotional intensity. Richards' unwavering dedication to capturing authentic visual experiences served as a guiding principle for Creed—inspiring him to prioritize observation and conveying nuanced psychological responses within his paintings. Furthermore, he draws inspiration from British Pre-Raphaelites—artists who championed detailed observation and symbolic imagery—whose aesthetic sensibilities align seamlessly with Creed’s own artistic inclinations. Like the Pre-Raphaelites, Creed seeks to imbue his artwork with meaning beyond mere visual appearance.

Notable Exhibitions & Recognition: A Growing Presence in Contemporary Art

Creed's artistic reputation has gained considerable traction through participation in prestigious exhibitions such as The Hampstead Art Society Summer Exhibition and The John Moores Painting Prize at the Walker Art Gallery—demonstrating his commitment to engaging with the broader art community. His pieces have been showcased in UK venues like Pitshanger Gallery in London, and internationally in China, Turkey, Singapore, Belgium, and Sweden—establishing him as a recognized figure within the global landscape of contemporary art. These exhibitions underscore Creed’s dedication to sharing his artistic vision with audiences worldwide.

The ‘Morning, Noon and Night’ Series: Capturing Suburban Atmosphere

Creed's most celebrated body of work revolves around the 'Morning, Noon and Night' series—a collection of paintings depicting scenes from suburban London during different times of day. These canvases are notable for their careful consideration of composition, colour palettes, and textural surfaces. The artist’s aim is not merely to reproduce visual impressions but rather to distill the emotional atmosphere of each moment—the quiet solitude of dawn, the bustling energy of midday, and the contemplative stillness of dusk. Through his meticulous brushwork and subtle tonal variations, Creed succeeds in conveying a palpable sense of place and capturing the psychological impact of urban life on the human spirit—a testament to Luminist principles and a profound reflection on the everyday world.
