Oleksander Rojtburd (1961-2021) was born in Odesa, Ukraine, a city steeped in artistic tradition yet profoundly shaped by Soviet influence. He graduated from the art and graphic faculty of the Odesa Pedagogical Institute in 1983, marking the beginning of his journey into the burgeoning Ukrainian contemporary art scene. His formative years coincided with the crumbling edifice of the USSR—a pivotal moment that fundamentally altered the trajectory of artistic expression across Eastern Europe—resulting in a distinctly postmodern landscape where established conventions clashed with experimental impulses. Rojtburd’s contribution to this transformation was undeniable, establishing himself as a key figure within the Ukrainian New Wave and championing the concept of Transavantgard – an aesthetic movement characterized by its rejection of academic formalism and embrace of raw emotion and subconscious imagery.- Early Career & Association: Rojtburd’s artistic career took root in 1993 with the founding of the New Art Association in Odesa, where he served as art director and later president. This association fostered collaboration and experimentation among young Ukrainian artists, solidifying his role as a catalyst for creative dialogue. He was instrumental in shaping the aesthetic landscape of Ukraine during this period of significant cultural change.
