Early Life, Family and Training

The lineage of Fridericus Carolus de Hosson is rooted in the Huguenot artist family De Hosson. Born on February 18, 1718, in Bad Bentheim, Germany, he entered a world defined by the brush and the court. His father, Maximilianus Franciscus de Hosson, held the position of court painter to the Count of Bentheim, establishing a professional environment where art was a primary language. This familial connection ensured that the craft was present from his earliest years.

Training begins in the shadow of his father's occupation. Fridericus Carolus de Hosson learns the technical nuances of painting directly from Maximilianus Franciscus, absorbing the methods of a man serving nobility. This apprenticeship is not merely a lesson in technique but an immersion into a specific social and professional tradition. He eventually adopts the signature F.C. de Hosson, a mark of his identity as a practitioner of the craft.

Life and Activity in Various Cities

The artist's movements trace a path through the borderlands of Germany and the Netherlands. Known in Germany as Friedrich Carl de Hosson, he spent his early professional years navigating the regional centers of Munster, Bentheim, and Meppen. These locations provided the initial landscape for his development as a painter and portraitist. His presence extended into East Friesland, where he maintained his professional activity before a significant shift in his residence.

In 1768, he settled in Groningen. This move marked a period of established residency in the northern Netherlands. His life there was marked by the presence of his family, including his wife, Christina Elisabeth Ludovica Antonetta Holtman. The social and professional circles of Groningen provided a backdrop for his continued work as a painter and wallpaper designer.

The final decade of his life saw further relocation. During the first half of the 1780s, he lived in Leeuwarden, staying with his son who practiced as an apothecary. This period of transition eventually led him toward his final destination in Oude Pekela.

Professional Career and Artistic Works

The studio of de Hosson functions as a site of dual identity. While he holds the military rank of Hauptmann, his primary output remains tied to the brush. He operates as a painter, portraitist, and wallpaper painter, moving between the intimate scale of a likeness and the expansive requirements of interior decoration. He signs his compositions simply as F.C. de Hosson.

His portraiture defines much of his professional output. These works capture the likenesses of his contemporaries, including a notable 1783 portrait of himself and his wife, Christina Elisabeth Ludovica Antonetta Holtman. Beyond the individual face, his skill extends to the decorative arts. He produces various chamber hangings, or wallpapers, designed to transform the atmosphere of a room. Fragments of these decorative works and several drawings remain preserved in the Groninger Museum.

Later Years, Death and Legacy

Life in the late eighteenth century saw the artist's family expand through his marriage to Christina Elisabeth Ludovica Antonetta Holtman. Together they had seven children. The family's artistic lineage continued through his son, Bernardus Franciscus Ignatius de Hosson, and his grandson, Casparus de Hosson, who also pursued a career as a painter. This multi-generational connection to the brush ensured the De Hosson name remained tied to the craft long after the initial generation established its presence in the region.

The final years of his life were marked by movement between established centers and smaller settlements. Following the death of his wife in 1784, he spent time in Leeuwarden living with his son, who worked as an apothecary. By approximately 1787, he had relocated to Oude Pekela. He remained there until his death on February 24, 1799, at the age of 80. His legacy persists through the surviving portraits and fragments held in collections such as the Groninger Museum.
