Keräilykohteen kuvaus

From the artist: Using the symbolic imagery of bras, I explore how the qualities I relate to, as a mature woman artist, have been shaped by global power dynamics during the last half-century. These qualities include being nurturing, compassionate, intuitive, productive and creative. As an 81-year-old artist, mother and grandmother, I have spent my career channeling, translating and expressing my feminine experience into an art practice. My two primary passions have been nurturing and caring for my husband and four daughters, and expressing my sculptural concerns through a female lens. My sculptures are made of wood - a hard, living material - which I soften and bend into supple, organic shapes. The resulting works reference the female body, and the ways in which it fosters protection and growth.Bras have an intimate relationship to female breasts, which themselves occupy many roles:source of nutrition, erotic zone, signifier of womanhood, and so on. Breasts are biological, butsociety expresses the expectations of womanhood through the function, appearance, and material of bras. They act as supportive garments, titillating lingerie, utilitarian objects and even armature. Drawing from my own lived experience, this work centers around the shifts in feminine identity in response to decades of socio-political pressure

Taiteilijan elämäkerta

The Fluidity of Form: The Sculptural Journey of Susan R. Manspeizer

Born in the vibrant cultural landscape of New York City in 1940, Susan R. Manspeizer has dedicated over three decades to a profound exploration of shape, texture, and emotion. Her artistic odyssey is one defined by an unwavering commitment to the organic, a pursuit that seeks to find the pulse of life within the seemingly static medium of wood. Through her mastery of bent wood sculpture, Manspeizer has developed a visual language that transcends mere abstraction, instead offering a sensitive dialogue between the physical properties of her materials and the intangible complexities of the human experience.

The foundations of her aesthetic vision were laid during her intensive studies at the prestigious Pratt Institute. It was here that she began to hone her technical command over wood, a medium she treats not as a rigid substrate, but as a living, breathing entity capable of immense suppleness. Eschewing the cold precision of geometric abstraction, Manspeizer gravitates toward asymmetrical compositions and sinuous curves that echo the rhythms found in nature. Her process involves a delicate manipulation of grain and form, often applying oil crayon by hand to color and burnish the contours of her works, creating surfaces that possess a tender, sensuous quality and an almost otherworldly mystery.

Symbolism and the Feminine Lens

As her career progressed, Manspeizer’s work deepened in its thematic complexity, increasingly utilizing sculpture as a vessel for exploring identity and social dynamics. A particularly poignant facet of her oeuvre involves the use of symbolic imagery to navigate the nuances of the feminine experience. In works such as Adaption, she employs the iconography of the bra to investigate how global power structures and socio-political pressures shape the qualities of womanhood—nurturing, intuitive, and resilient. By transforming a utilitarian object into a sculptural element, she bridges the gap between the intimate and the political.

This exploration is deeply rooted in her personal history as an artist, mother, and grandmother. Her sculptures often reference the female body, not through literal representation, but through the way her softened wooden shapes mimic the protective and generative roles of biological life. The tension between the hardness of the wood and the fluidity of its shape serves as a powerful metaphor for vulnerability and strength, allowing her to communicate profound truths about growth, protection, and the enduring spirit of life.

Legacy and Recognition

Manspeizer’s influence extends beyond the studio through her significant contributions to art education. Her tenure teaching at renowned institutions such as the Parsons School of Design allowed her to bridge the gap between artistic theory and tactile practice, nurturing a new generation of creators while refining her own sensibilities. This dual role as practitioner and educator has enriched her perspective, ensuring that her work remains deeply connected to the evolving discourse of contemporary sculpture.

Her professional achievements are marked by numerous accolades and prestigious exhibitions that have cemented her place in the contemporary art world. Notable highlights of her career include:

  • Honorable Mentions from the National Arts Club, recognizing her technical excellence and expressive depth.
  • The First Place Sculpture Award from the Greenwich Art Society, a testament to her mastery of the medium.
  • The Epstein Memorial Award received at the National Association of Women Artists’ 123rd Annual Members Exhibition.
  • International Presence through exhibitions in Tokyo, Japan, and placements in significant public collections such as the Kohler Corporation and the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum.

Today, the work of Susan R. Manspeizer remains a captivating study in contradiction—where hard wood becomes soft, where the personal becomes universal, and where the organic form captures the very essence of a life lived through the lens of profound empathy and artistic devotion.
