Osman Hamdi Bey, turkkilaisen taiteen merkittävä hahmo, syntyi vuonna 1842 Istanbulissa, Turkissa. Suurvisiri Ibrahim Edhem Pashan vanhimpana poikana hänet lähetettiin Pariisiin vuonna 1860 opiskelemaan oikeustiedettä. Kaupungin sielukas ja taiteellinen ilmapiiri kuitenkin lumosi hänet syvästi, ja hänestä kehittyi intohimoinen maalaaja.
