Yellow Tree (Odilon Redon, 1900) Öljymaalaus, käsin maalattu vain sinua varten

Identification of the Symbolist Masterpiece

Yellow Tree is an oil on canvas painting by Odilon Redon. This floral painting, completed in 1901, focuses on the subject matter of nature’s beauty and abundance. The composition centers on a large tree with intricate branches reaching toward a luminous sky, surrounded by a dense collection of foliage, leaves, and blossoms.

The work belongs to the Symbolist movement. Redon utilized a palette dominated by warm golden hues and cream tones to depict the landscape. The arrangement of the tree and the surrounding flora creates a sense of overflowing vitality. The subject matter emphasizes the organic forms of the natural world through a specific focus on botanical life and light.

Visual Composition and Ethereal Elements

The composition is vertically oriented, emphasizing the height and grandeur of the central tree. This large form features intricate branches that reach upwards into a hazy, luminous sky. The scene is filled with an abundance of foliage, including leaves, flowers, and delicate blossoms. In the foreground, a dense collection of flowers and foliage appears in shades of yellow, gold, and cream. Small figures can be discerned within the foliage, providing a sense of scale and mystery to the landscape.

The landscape is dominated by warm golden hues. Lines throughout the work are fluid and organic, suggesting movement and growth. Shapes are predominantly rounded and flowing, which contributes to the ethereal quality of the scene. The overall impression is one of a lush, dreamlike landscape where light and color are prioritized over precise representation.

Artistic Technique and Material Application

The application of oil paint follows a style that leans towards impressionistic tendencies merged with elements of romanticism. Loose, expressive brushstrokes define the forms, allowing colors to blend seamlessly and shimmer across the surface. This method creates a texture that appears soft and layered, which contributes to the immersive quality of the landscape. The composition utilizes a somewhat flattened perspective, drawing the viewer into the immediate space of the foliage and branches.

Light is treated as a diffused and warm presence, casting a gentle glow throughout the scene. This lighting interacts with the thick, textured brushstrokes used on the tree trunk to provide a grounding element against the more ethereal sky. The interplay of light and color prioritizes sensory experience over precise, literal depiction. The resulting surface maintains a sense of movement and growth through its organic, flowing lines.
