Identification of Saint Matthew by Master Mateo

Saint Matthew is a marble statue created by Master Mateo. The work is dated about 1200. This figure represents the evangelist in a moment of quiet study, seated at a table with an open book.

The sculpture is part of the religious iconography associated with the artist's significant contributions to Spanish Romanesque art. Master Mateo's hand is evident in the detailed rendering of the subject's features and the heavy folds of the drapery. The piece captures a sense of solemnity through its contemplative pose.

Composition and Visual Details

The figure is captured in a close-up view, dominating the frame to emphasize its physical presence. Seated at a table, the subject is positioned with an open book, a pose suggesting a moment of quiet contemplation or intense study. The arrangement focuses the viewer's attention on the interaction between the figure and the text, creating a sense of stillness.

The sculpture is presented against a dark green wall within a museum setting. This background provides a high-contrast backdrop that isolates the form, allowing the contours of the seated figure to remain the primary focus. The composition relies on a frontal perspective, presenting the subject in a direct and straightforward manner.

Technique and Material Properties

The sculpture is executed through traditional stone carving, utilizing marble as its primary medium. The material displays natural veining and subtle variations in tone across its surface. These geological characteristics provide a sense of organic depth to the figure.

The artist achieved a high level of detail in the rendering of the facial features and the complex folds of the drapery. Through precise chisel work, the texture of the stone is manipulated to create contrast; the surface remains smooth in certain areas while appearing rougher in others. This variation in tactile quality emphasizes the physical presence of the form.
