Landscape with Figures Öljymaalaus, käsin maalattu vain sinua varten

The Landscape with Figures painting by Ignacio De Iriarte is a masterpiece of Baroque art, characterized by its dramatic use of light and shadow. Created in 1660, this oil on canvas painting measures 108 x 163 cm and is housed at the Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao, Spain.

Artistic Composition

The painting features a dense and complex landscape, with various elements arranged to form a diagonal composition. A group of trees on a hill dominates the center of the scene, dividing it into two parts. On the left, a group of people is depicted in a clearing, while on the right, a river forms a pool, providing the most luminous point of the painting. The use of chiaroscuro creates a sense of depth and volume, drawing the viewer's eye into the scene.

Influences and Style

The painting showcases Ignacio De Iriarte's skill as a landscape artist, influenced by Flemish landscapes that arrived in Seville during his time. The work features a characteristic breakdown into three differentiated planes, with green and bituminous brown tones in the foreground, clearer greens in the middle plane, and bluish tones in the background. This style is reminiscent of other Baroque artists, such as Claude Lorrain (Claude Gellée), who also explored the use of light and shadow in their landscapes.
