He formally studied at the Academy of San Carlos and later at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado 'La Esmeralda'. Later in his career, Ruiz drew inspiration from Flemish artists and Miguel Covarrubias.

He also had exhibits in Mexico City, Toronto, Quebec, Buenos Aires, and Seville.
