Early Life and Training
Philip Corbet was born in Ireland, likely in County Tipperary. Though he was intended for the Church, his passion for painting led him to pursue art instead. He studied at the Dublin Society Drawing Schools, specifically within the School of Landscape and Ornament Drawing, before moving to London in 1821 to enroll as a student at the Royal Academy. During his time at the Academy, he received several awards, including a silver medal in 1822 for a copy in oil of an historical figure and a large silver medal in 1823 for a drawing from a statue. He was also awarded a premium for a copy in oil of a bust of Homer.
Career and Travels
Corbet spent much of his working life in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, where he established a productive career as a portraitist. His work was characterized by a highly finished, refined style. In the late 1820s, he traveled to The Netherlands, visiting Dordrecht and The Hague. During this period, he painted several individuals, including Arie Johannes Lamme and Henrietta Christina Temminck. His portraits of Hendrik and his wife Wendelina are held in the collection of the Teylers Museum.
After returning to Shrewsbury, he married Jane Carline and lived in the Judge's Lodgings. By 1856, it was suggested that his sight was failing, which impacted his ability to practice painting. He later resided in St. Helier, Jersey, where he was listed as a retired painter, before moving to Bitterne, near Southampton, where he died.
