A Life in Paris

Born in Paris on 17 November 1690, Noël-Nicolas Coypel grew up within the walls of a family of painters. His father, Noël Coypel, and his half-brother, Antoine, provided his first lessons in the craft. He learned to handle a brush by watching them work. By 1716, he had received accreditation from the Académie Royale, and by 1720, he was a full member of that same institution.

His path through the art world followed a steady progression of official roles. He held a professorship at the Académie starting in 1733. His time in the studio was marked by specific tasks, such as painting the ceiling of the Chapel of the Virgin at the Church of Saint-Sauveur and creating works for the secret chapel of the Sorbonne. In 1734, his life ended following an unspecified domestic accident.

The Brush and the Myth

His work often turned toward the stories of antiquity. In 1727, he completed The Rape of Europa, a large oil on canvas that uses light to define the movement of Zeus, disguised as a white bull, as he carries the princess away. He also painted The Triumph of Amphitrite for a competition held by the Académie, a work that drew attention from the public even though it did not win a prize.

Other subjects in his repertoire included:

  • Neptune abducting the nymph Amymone, which served as his reception piece.
  • The infant Bacchus entrusted to the Nymphs of Nysa.
  • Saint Francis of Paola crossing the sea with his companions, painted for the Place des Vosges.
  • La Nativité, a religious scene now held in the Musée des Beaux-Arts.

Technique and Influence

The way he applied paint showed a deep connection to the classical style of Nicolas Poussin. He studied how Poussin organized compositions and used color to create order. His palette often relied on earth tones like ochre, brown, and gray, though he used bright highlights on skin and clouds to direct the eye. In The Rape of Europa, the diagonal lines of the figures create a sense of tension within the frame.

He worked with a focus on the physical details of his subjects, from the folds in drapery to the muscularity of mythological figures. While he was part of a family that held significant positions in the French art establishment, his own work maintained a specific charm through its mythological subject matter. He even spent time as an assistant to Chardin, further grounding his practice in the daily realities of the Parisian studio.
