José Martí
José Martí (1905 – 1957) was a Cuban male artist born in Santo Domingo, Las Villas, Cuba on April 1st. He studied at “La Academia Vallate de La Sociedad Economica de Amigos del País”. In 1923, he began his training at the renowned Academy of San Alejandro in Havana. Here he met Victor Manuel who influenced and aided him in beginning a career in modern art. From 1936 onward, Arche participated in several personal exhibitions and group expositions in Cuba and abroad. He has garnered many different prizes in many salons. In 1938, he painted a fresco in the Normal School of Santa Clara. Later on in his life, he directed the “Escuela de Artes Plástica” in Camagüey which to date carries his name. Jorge Arche died in Cádiz in 1957.- Early Life and Career: Jorge Arche’s formative years were marked by exposure to European artistic traditions, particularly those championed by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. His studies at San Alejandro solidified these influences, fostering a stylistic approach characterized by vibrant color palettes and expressive brushstrokes—a deliberate departure from the academic conventions prevalent at the time.
- Grupo de los Once: Arche’s involvement with Grupo de los Once represented a pivotal moment in Cuban art history. This collective of artists actively challenged established artistic norms, prioritizing experimentation and emotional resonance over formal adherence to tradition. Their ambition was to forge a distinctly Cuban visual language, reflecting the nation's cultural heritage and grappling with its evolving identity.
- Artistic Style and Influences: Arche’s technique leaned heavily on Impressionist principles, utilizing broken color and layering to capture fleeting moments of light and atmosphere. He drew inspiration from European masters like Monet and Cézanne, adapting their compositional strategies to depict landscapes and portraits imbued with Cuban character.
- Notable Works: Among his most celebrated pieces is “Retrato de Monsignor Angel Gaztelu,” executed in 1937—a masterful depiction of religious iconography rendered in oil on board. This artwork exemplifies Arche’s ability to convey profound emotion through meticulous observation and skillful brushwork.
- Legacy and Impact: Jorge Arche's contribution to Cuban art extends beyond his individual creations; he established the Escuela de Artes Plástica Camagüey, nurturing a new generation of artists committed to artistic innovation and cultural preservation. His work continues to resonate with audiences today, serving as a testament to the enduring power of visual expression and its capacity to capture the spirit of a nation.
Grupo de los Once
The Grupo de los Once (Group of Eleven) was a Cuban artistic collective that emerged in Havana during the 1920s, marking a decisive break from academic painting and advocating for a more expressive and innovative approach to artmaking. Spearheaded by figures like Victor Manuel Garcia and Jorge Arche Miranda, this group sought to redefine Cuban visual culture, rejecting stylistic constraints imposed by European traditions and embracing experimentation as a means of articulating the complexities of Cuban identity. Their manifesto declared a rejection of formal conventions and an insistence on capturing the essence of Cuban life—a bold assertion that propelled Grupo de los Once to the forefront of Cuban modernism.- Rejection of Academic Tradition: Grupo de los Once vehemently opposed the rigid stylistic doctrines of academic painting, prioritizing emotional intensity and subjective experience over technical precision.
- Exploration of Cuban Identity: The group’s artistic endeavors were driven by a desire to portray Cuba authentically—its landscapes, its people, its traditions—reflecting the nation's multifaceted cultural heritage.
- Influence on Cuban Art History: Grupo de los Once fundamentally altered the trajectory of Cuban art history, establishing a precedent for stylistic freedom and fostering a spirit of artistic inquiry that would endure throughout subsequent decades.
Artistic Style
Jorge Arche’s artistic style was profoundly shaped by his exposure to Impressionist techniques during his studies in Paris. He skillfully employed broken color, layering brushstrokes, and capturing fleeting moments of light—methods championed by masters like Monet and Cézanne—to imbue his paintings with vibrancy and emotional depth. His landscapes and portraits alike conveyed a palpable sense of atmosphere and immediacy, reflecting the dynamism of Cuban life and culture.Notable Exhibitions
Arche’s artwork has graced prestigious venues both domestically and internationally, showcasing its recognition as a cornerstone of Cuban artistic heritage.
