Biografía del artista

Thomas Bardwell: A Norwich Portraitist and Pioneer of Artistic Instruction

Thomas Bardwell (1704 – 1767) stands as a significant figure in the artistic landscape of eighteenth-century England, particularly within the vibrant art scene of Norwich. Initially establishing himself as a painter of decorative panels for his family’s business in Bungay, Suffolk, Bardwell swiftly ascended to prominence through commissions that showcased both technical skill and imaginative vision. His early portraits—conversation pieces dating back to 1736—offer glimpses into the social life of his time, notably one depicting the Brewster family of Beccles, now housed in the Geffrye Museum, demonstrating an acute understanding of capturing familial dynamics and aristocratic elegance. A pivotal moment arrived in 1746 when Bardwell secured a prestigious commission from the Norwich Artillery Company to portray William Crowe—who would later become mayor—effectively shattering the established dominance of German-born John Theodore Heins in civic portraiture within the city. This undertaking cemented Bardwell’s reputation as a trailblazer and resulted in nine portraits displayed prominently in St Andrew's Hall, solidifying his position as Norwich’s foremost artist. Throughout the 1740s and 1750s, Bardwell cultivated connections with London’s artistic circles, producing works that reflected the burgeoning Romantic movement. Among these is “Joshua Ward Receiving Money from Britannia” (1748), an allegorical masterpiece residing in the Royal College of Surgeons' collection—once adorning Ward’s parlour in Whitehall—which brilliantly utilizes symbolism to convey themes of philanthropy and civic duty. The engraving after this painting, executed by Bernard Baron in 1748-9, serves as a testament to Bardwell’s enduring influence on artistic representation. Bardwell’s dedication extended beyond commissioned portraits; he undertook extensive projects across Yorkshire and Scotland during 1752-3, demonstrating versatility and ambition. His lasting legacy resides not only in his artistic output but also in his groundbreaking treatise “The Practice of Painting and Perspective Made Easy” (1756), presented to the Earl of Rochford. Published by Miller of Bungay, this book—a remarkable achievement considering Bardwell’s perceived shortcomings as an artist—became a cornerstone of artistic education, lauded by Edward Edwards for its clarity and precision regarding painting techniques. A second edition appeared in 1773, further disseminating Bardwell's pedagogical insights.
  • Notable Works: Sir Thomas Churchman
Bardwell’s contribution to Norwich art history is undeniable. His portraits at Langley—featuring historical subjects—were recognized by Turner and Carr as exemplary representations of the era. He remains a celebrated figure whose artistic endeavors continue to inspire admiration for his meticulous craftsmanship and profound understanding of visual storytelling.
