In 1840, she married her maternal first cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. They had nine children. Following the death of Albert in 1861, Victoria entered a period of deep mourning and seclusion, often referred to as the "widow of Windsor," and wore black for the remainder of her life.
