Professional assembly required - this is not a DIY product.
The kit must be assembled and the canvas stretched by an experienced professional framer, using wood glue (not supplied), a canvas stretching plier and clamps to hold the bars square while the glue dries. Incorrect assembly or uneven canvas tension can permanently damage the artwork and is not covered by our warranty.
All solid wood bars are included, precisely cut to size.
Assembled with the screws provided, plus wood glue for the corner joints, which is not supplied and must be sourced by your framer.
Professional tools are required and not included: a canvas stretching plier (tensioner) and clamps to hold the bars square while the glue dries.
Important:
The corner joints require wood glue, the bars must be held with clamps until the glue is fully dry, and tightening the canvas on the assembled frame requires a canvas stretching plier. None of these are included in the kit. Please arrange an experienced professional framer before ordering this size.

Artist Biography
Early Life, Family and Training
Born on May 24, 1862, in Werneck, Germany, Friedrich Fehr entered a world shaped by the steady hand of his father, Kaspar Fehr, who worked as a notary. His mother, Anna, raised him within this structured environment, providing the foundation for a life that would eventually move from the legalities of a notary's household to the creative disciplines of the academy. Before he ever picked up a brush to seek his own path, he sought knowledge at the Realgymnasium in Würzburg, where his early education began to take shape.
The pull of the visual arts eventually led him away from the classroom and toward the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He arrived there in 1878, beginning a long and formative period of study that would last until 1884. It was within these academy walls that his technical skill was forged under the guidance of seasoned masters. He studied the nuances of form and light under Alexander Strähuber, Gyula Benczúr, and Ludwig von Löfftz, each contributing to the development of his hand and eye.
Academic Career and Teaching
After his formative years and a transformative period in Italy, supported by a scholarship from the Martin von Wagner Foundation, Fehr sought to shape the next generation of painters. He joined Ludwig Schmid-Reutte and Paul Nauen to establish a private art school, a venture that would eventually draw notable talents to his doorstep. This period of instruction was marked by a commitment to the technical foundations of the craft, as he encouraged his students to embrace lithography and etching as essential companions to their painting studies.
His reputation as an educator led to a significant appointment at the Karlsruher Akademie in 1897. By 1899, he had ascended to the position of head of the painting class, a role he held with dedication for many years. He guided his students through the evolving landscape of German art until the class was discontinued in 1923. During this long tenure, his influence extended beyond the academy, as he also taught classes at the Malerinnenschule Karlsruhe from 1904 to 1919.
Artistic Style and Genres
The brush of Friedrich Fehr moved through the shifting currents of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, finding a home within the traditions of Historicism. His hand was equally comfortable navigating the quietude of Realism and the decorative sensibilities of Art Nouveau. He possessed a particular affinity for the intimate, often turning his gaze toward the quietude of interiors and the lived moments of genre scenes. In these compositions, one finds a clear debt to the Dutch Masters, as he sought to capture the subtle play of light and the dignity of everyday life within a domestic setting.
His curiosity was not confined to the private sphere, however. He moved with ease between the grand scale of history painting and the more observational realms of landscape painting and portraiture. Whether he was documenting the sweeping lines of the natural world or the specific character of a sitter, his work remained anchored in a sense of tangible reality. Even during the tumult of war, his commitment to the visual truth of his surroundings led him to paint soldiers on the front lines, a departure from his more tranquil studies of domesticity.

Later Years and Death
The weight of the Great War eventually reached even the halls of the academy. In 1915, Fehr stepped away from his duties as an educator to seek the reality of the front lines. He chose to paint the soldiers there, capturing the immediate presence of men in a time of profound upheaval. This period of departure from his structured academic life allowed him to confront the human condition in its most stark and direct form.
As the years progressed, the demands of teaching gave way to the quietude of retirement in 1924. Seeking a different pace for his final years, he and his family moved to Polling. It was in this setting that he spent his remaining time, far from the bustling art schools of his youth. He passed away in Polling, Germany, on September 29, 1927.
